Thrift stores in Bengaluru: where to buy pre-loved clothes

Both work, and most people use both. Offline means walk-in racks you can try on and haggle at, spread across areas like Indiranagar, Koramangala and Jayanagar. Online means curated thrift stores and Instagram sellers who post timed drops and ship across the city. Offline is better for fit and for volume buying. For everyday basics, often not. A plain new t-shirt in a sale can beat a thrifted one. Thrifting wins on the pieces that are expensive new: denim, jackets, branded and vintage wear, party and occasion clothes you will wear a handful of times. That is where the same money buys noticeably better fabric and construction.

It varies by store, and it is a fair question to ask before buying. Curated stores and online resale platforms usually clean and quality-check stock as part of listing it. Smaller shops often do not. Washing anything second-hand before its first wear is sensible either way.

Some buy outright, some take stock on consignment and pay you only after it sells, and some only accept donations. The terms differ enough that it is worth asking each store directly. If you want to clear out a full wardrobe rather than sell a few good pieces, donation and pick-up services are usually the faster route.

A thrift store sells second-hand clothing: garments someone already owned and wore. An export surplus shop sells new clothing that was manufactured for export and never shipped, often with the labels cut. Both are cheap and both keep clothes out of landfill, but only one is second-hand. Several shops in Bengaluru advertise as thrift while stocking surplus, so it is worth asking directly.
