Your Guide

How to thrift well
Worth knowing before you go digging through a rack
- 📏 Ignore the label size. Second-hand stock spans decades and brands. Measure a garment you already own and ask the seller for flat measurements.
- 🔍 Check the wear points first. Underarms, collar, crotch seam, knees. That is where a garment gives out.
- 🌏 Know what you are buying. Export surplus and factory seconds are brand-new unsold stock, not second-hand. Both keep clothes out of landfill. Only one is thrifting.
- 🧼 Wash before you wear. Sensible with anything second-hand, whatever the seller says.
- 📱 Follow the sellers you like. A lot of Bengaluru thrifting happens as timed Instagram drops, not shop visits.
What else can you buy second-hand?
Clothes are the easy start. These hold their value just as well:
- 📚 Books
- 🪑 Furniture
- 📱 Refurbished phones and laptops, with a warranty
- 🚲 Bicycles
More of these are coming to EcoFlyp, city by city.
Why buy second-hand?
The greenest kurta is the one that already exists.
Most of the damage a garment does is done before it ever reaches a shop. Growing the fibre, dyeing it, finishing it and moving it around the world is where the water and the carbon go. Buying a piece that already exists skips all of it, because nothing new had to be made for you.
It adds up faster than it sounds. WRAP found that extending the average life of clothes by just three months of active use per item would lead to a 5-10% reduction in each of the carbon, water and waste footprints. A thrifted jacket is not being extended by months. It is being extended by years.
Recycling is not the safety net most people assume it is. Of the textile waste that does reach a recycling facility, only 1% is recycled into new clothing. Wearing something again is the only route that keeps a garment doing the job it was made for.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about buying second-hand clothes in Bengaluru
Where can I thrift in Bangalore, offline and online?
Both work, and most people use both. Offline means walk-in racks you can try on and haggle at, spread across areas like Indiranagar, Koramangala and Jayanagar. Online means curated thrift stores and Instagram sellers who post timed drops and ship across the city. Offline is better for fit and for volume buying. Online is better for specific pieces and for sizes that walk-in racks rarely carry. Every store on this page is marked as one or the other.
Is thrifting actually cheaper than buying new?
For everyday basics, often not. A plain new t-shirt in a sale can beat a thrifted one. Thrifting wins on the pieces that are expensive new: denim, jackets, branded and vintage wear, party and occasion clothes you will wear a handful of times. That is where the same money buys noticeably better fabric and construction.
Are thrift store clothes cleaned before they are sold?
It varies by store, and it is a fair question to ask before buying. Curated stores and online resale platforms usually clean and quality-check stock as part of listing it. Smaller shops often do not. Washing anything second-hand before its first wear is sensible either way.
Can I sell my old clothes to a thrift store in Bangalore?
Some buy outright, some take stock on consignment and pay you only after it sells, and some only accept donations. The terms differ enough that it is worth asking each store directly. If you want to clear out a full wardrobe rather than sell a few good pieces, donation and pick-up services are usually the faster route.
What is the difference between a thrift store and an export surplus shop?
A thrift store sells second-hand clothing: garments someone already owned and wore. An export surplus shop sells new clothing that was manufactured for export and never shipped, often with the labels cut. Both are cheap and both keep clothes out of landfill, but only one is second-hand. Several shops in Bengaluru advertise as thrift while stocking surplus, so it is worth asking directly.
