Your Guide
What sells, what does not, and how to avoid losing half the payout to fees.
How to get the most for your clothes
Worth doing before you hand a bag over
- 👗 Sell the good pieces, donate the rest. Buyers pay for brands, occasion wear, denim and barely-worn pieces. Everyday basics rarely earn much anywhere.
- 🧼 Wash and press first. Most services inspect before they pay, and stained or damaged stock is either rejected or valued as scrap.
- 📸 Photograph in daylight against a plain wall. Show the label, the fabric close up, and any flaw honestly. Hidden damage is the usual reason a payout gets cut at inspection.
- ⏳ Check when you get paid, not just how much. Pickup services pay on collection. Consignment platforms pay only after your item finds a buyer, which can take weeks or not happen at all.
- 🧾 Ask about the deductions before you hand anything over. Commission, cash-out charges, GST and pickup fees all come out of what finally reaches you.
- 📋 Read the excluded list. Undergarments, footwear and accessories are refused by several services even when the clothes are accepted.
What else can you sell second-hand?
Clothes are the easy start. These hold their resale value better:
- 📱 Phones and laptops
- 🪑 Furniture
- 📚 Books
- 🚲 Bicycles
More of these are coming to EcoFlyp, category by category.
Why selling beats binning
A garment that gets sold is a garment that keeps getting worn.
Selling is not just the version of clearing out your wardrobe that pays. It is the version that keeps the clothes in use. Every piece that finds a second owner is one that did not have to be made for them, and making it is where nearly all of the water and carbon sit.
The gain is bigger than it looks. WRAP found that extending the average life of clothes by just three months of active use per item would lead to a 5-10% reduction in each of the carbon, water and waste footprints. Passing something on adds years, not months.
India generates roughly 7,800 kilotonnes of textile waste a year, and only 34 per cent of India's textile waste is reused through repair or conversion into new products. Most of the rest is incinerated, downcycled or sent to landfill. Selling what still has wear left in it is the simplest way to keep your wardrobe on the right side of that number.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about selling old clothes in India
Where can I sell old clothes online in India?
Two different models, and they suit different wardrobes. App-based pickup services collect from your door and pay you for the lot, which suits clearing out a full wardrobe of ordinary clothes. Resale and consignment platforms list your pieces individually and pay you when each one sells, which earns more per item but only for pieces buyers actually want. Every service on this page is one or the other, and the listing says which.
Which services pay cash for old clothes?
Very few pay cash on the spot, and they tend to be city-bound rather than nationwide. Most pay in store credit, wallet points or a bank transfer after a quality check, and consignment platforms pay only once your item sells. If cash matters more than the amount, filter for the doorstep pickup services and confirm the payment method when you book.
How much money do you get for old clothes in India?
For ordinary used clothing sold by weight, the rate is low enough that convenience is usually the real reason to do it rather than the money. Individual resale is where the value sits: branded, occasion and barely-worn pieces can fetch a meaningful share of what they cost new. Any per-kilo figure you see quoted is indicative, not a rate card, and depends on how much of your bag is actually wearable.
What is the difference between selling and donating old clothes?
Selling returns value to you, whether that is cash, credit or a share of the sale price. Donating returns nothing to you and passes the full value to the cause or the person receiving the clothes. It matters practically too: donation-only organisations are not set up to buy, and asking them to takes up time they need for their actual work. If nothing on this page fits, the donation page is the right route.
Can I sell clothes that are torn, stained or worn out?
Not for money, in most cases. Services that accept damaged textiles take them for recycling rather than resale, so they carry no payout even when they are collected in the same bag. Sort honestly before booking. Sending worn-out items as sellable stock is the fastest way to have a whole pickup downgraded at inspection.
Is it safe to give my clothes to a pickup service?
Check three things before you book: that the payout terms are written down somewhere you can point to, that there is a working contact number or support channel, and that recent reviews exist. Empty your pockets and remove anything with your name or address on it. Listings on this page were checked when they were added, but terms change, so confirm the current terms with the service directly.
