The Auroville Earth Institute, established in 1989 and holding a UNESCO Chair, researches and teaches earth-based construction such as compressed stabilised earth blocks, arches and vaults. Building with earth cuts out energy-hungry cement and fired brick and uses material from the site itself. Architects, builders and students come here to learn how to build well with one of the oldest and lowest-impact materials there is.
