About this organisation
Bombay Recycling Concern (BRC) is a Mumbai-based for-profit social enterprise (LLP) dedicated to building a circular economy for textiles. Registered in 2021, BRC acts as a bridge between urban surplus and rural necessity.
The Mission
BRC works to give a "second life" to wearable clothing while empowering marginalized communities. They are unique in their direct partnership with the Devipujak (Waghari) community, a group traditionally associated with clothes recycling for over six decades. By training and employing members of this community as pickup and processing associates, BRC preserves cultural heritage while providing dignified, stable livelihoods.
The Circular Model
- Collection: They gather wearable clothes and home textiles from urban households, offices, and colleges.
- Processing: Items are segregated, sanitized, and mended by trained associates.
- Redistribution: The processed clothes are sold in rural and semi-urban markets at highly subsidized rates—typically below ₹50 per item—ensuring low-income families and labor communities have access to quality clothing.
- Repurposing: Items that are no longer wearable are converted into industrial wipers and machine cleaners, ensuring zero textile waste.
